BETHEL -- A New York man faces multiple charges after he got into an altercation with a Bethel police officer early Sunday, police said.

Andrew Didio of Levittown, N.Y., is charged with attempted assault on a police officer and two counts of interfering with police.

According to police, an officer stopped to check out a disabled car on Route 6 near Weed Road. But then it turned nasty.

"During the encounter with the motorist he became uncooperative and punched the officer in the head attempting to assault him," Sgt. Robert Durkin, Jr. said in a news release.

Durkin said the suspect then took off running, and managed to evade police from Bethel, Brookfield and Newtown.

He was spotted a couple hours later by a Bethel police officer near the Days Inn motel. The man struggled with that officer but was eventually arrested, Durkin said.

Didio was held on $5,000 bond.
